When should I bring my child to the orthodontist?
The American Academy of Orthodontists recommends that children visit the orthodontist for the first time no later than the age of 7 for an exam. This exam determines the type of orthodontic treatment a child may need or helps identify any issues that can prevent problems in the future.
We use a two-phase approach, called interceptive treatment, to help correct crowding, crossbites, deep bites, overbites and underbites early on to avoid long-term damage to the teeth.
What is Interceptive Treatment?
Interceptive Treatment is a two-phase orthodontic treatment. Phase 1 begins when your child is growing and has a combination of baby and adult teeth. It includes:
- Palate expanders
- Headgear
- Facemasks
- Bite plates
Not every child will need phase one treatments.
Phase two consists of what typically comes to mind when you think of traditional metal braces. This occurs when the last baby tooth is lost, and your child will receive a full set of fixed braces. The main focus of this phase is bite alignment and bite correction of your child’s adult teeth.
